About FreeTV
FreeTV is a multi-channel TV operator that offers over 62 linear channels, ground-breaking content and a vast VOD library, providing audiences in the Israel media market access to channels, catchup capabilities, movies, and series anytime, anywhere.
The Challenge
FreeTV involves a wide range of different technologies and application, all of which must be securely connected to the AWS Cloud. As a result, a new infrastructure was needed to that would accommodate:
- Backup stored in separate AWS accounts for Disaster recovery and compliance.
- Elasticity to adjust to the growing number of users.
- Flexibility to spawn the development and staging environments to make development comfortable.
- Compliance with several international security standards.
- On-premises connectivity to use existing content.
- Cost efficiency.
Automat-it was brought in as FreeTV’s DevOps partner. Focusing on security and compliance, our role was to apply security best practices for the multi-account AWS environment. Crucially for this project, this included the backup of data from numerous different sources.
The Solution
There were several solutions and steps implemented.
In the build phase, Automat-it’s AWS Landing Zone solution was deployed to provide a pre-configured solution that dramatically reduced time to implementation from weeks to days.
The AWS Control Tower was used to make sure compliance was achieved with AWS Cloud Governance best practices. This made possible the management of all AWS accounts used in FreeTV AWS organisations with Amazon Macie to discover sensitive business data.
To cater to persistent storage needs, the solution also utilises several Amazon Aurora MySQL-Compatible Edition and Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition regional clusters for the persistent storage needs. A number of Amazon ElastiCache (Redis OSS) were used for caching needs.
Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) is used to share the data to be processed by multiple Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) workloads.
Continuous backup creation and copy to another AWS account was implemented using AWS Backup and organisational backup policies. Older backups are moved to cold storage.
Meanwhile, Automat-it’s team evaluates the risks and provides the mitigation strategy using Automat-it’s Risk Management framework.
Automat-it’s 24/7 NOC team provides incident management services. Infrastructure, applications, and compliance are continuously monitored by the security, NOC, and DevOps teams.
The Results
- A scalable, highly available, secured, stable, and monitored multi-account environment with cost-effective centralised backup management.
- Data backups are regularly created and copied to a separate AWS account that improves security and reduces risks.
- 24/7 monitoring of alarms and a secured centralised log archive.
- Ongoing management of cloud cost and performance.
