Introduction
Macademia, an award-winning edtech and media group with apps and channels for kids, offers a comprehensive library of educational games and videos in 22 languages. Macademia also produces quizzes to maximize the educational value of its video content. Designed for use in the home and by classroom teachers, these quizzes are presented as a series of thematic Quests in a learning journey designed to test young learners’ understanding of the content they’ve watched. However, with a growing library spanning 60,000+ videos, scaling quiz production became a significant challenge for the business.
This case study explores how Macademia collaborated with Automat-it to utilize Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies for automatic quiz generation, significantly improving efficiency and output.
Challenges
Macademia faced challenges scaling its content to new markets due to the time and resources required to create a quiz on a selected topic. The entire process required manual execution, which was time-consuming and labour-intensive, often spanning two or even three days per quiz in certain instances. Additionally, with distribution deals spanning 50+ global markets, it needed to rapidly scale up quiz generation to support multiple languages.
Solution
To help the business achieve its goals, Automat-it and AWS worked with the Macademia team to create the concept for “QuestBuilder”, a brand-new tool which can analyse any video library and use a combination of GenAI and machine learning to generate engaging and relevant quiz content.
At the core of the solution are three key features:
- Video Chapter Analysis identifies multiple chapters within a single video and generates a set of quizzes for each chapter. A chapter is a segment of the video that focuses on a particular topic.
- Visual Description analyses video content to define scenes for each chapter, even when no audio is present.
- Quiz Generation utilizes the prompt of a large language model (LLM) to input examples and train the model, enabling it to generate quizzes that maintain the style, structure, and complexity characteristic of Macademia quizzes, enhancing the model’s relevance and effectiveness in educational contexts.

- With a time saving of more than 95% compared to manual quiz creation tools, Macademia can generate new activities in as little as 10 minutes using QuestBuilder.
- Automated quiz generation: Macademia can now automatically generate quizzes from their video content, saving significant time and resources. QuestBuilder streamlines the entire quiz creation process.
